My name is Silvana Chaves and I would like to welcome you to Estudio Chaves & Asociados — a boutique agency that offers premium translation and interpreting services tailored to meet your needs.

With over 30 years of experience as a translator and interpreter in different markets around the world, I have witnessed the profound transformation of the T&I profession. Its purpose, however, remains unchanged: to achieve effective communication in any language.

At Estudio Chaves, we have adapted to every stage of this transformation, while always maintaining the spirit of our mission. As a result, technology has become our ally, but it has not replaced us. Ideas are too important to be left at the mercy of automatic processes that are incapable −so far− of capturing the subjectivity of human language. When you resort to machine translation, you run the risk of losing sight of the message’s nuances, which are just as important as what each word denotes, if not more so.

Translating a text or interpreting a speech is not as simple as swapping the words in one language for the words in another. It is a process of linguistic and cultural decoding, where the translator or interpreter produces a message that the target audience can understand because it has been tailored to their way of organizing ideas.

Every culture has its own worldview, its own way of interpreting reality and articulating thoughts. A Spaniard and an Argentine may share the same language, just as a Brit and an American do, but they each have a different way of looking at the world, influenced by multiple factors, including historical and geopolitical context, education, religion, and more. Accordingly, the translation and interpreting process also involves an element of “intercultural intermediation” that machines are not equipped to handle either.

Silvana Chaves is the founder and director of Estudio Chaves & Asociados and has over 30 years of experience in the Latin American and European translation and interpreting market. She is a certified member of the American Translators Association (ATA), holds a degree in conference interpreting and is a sworn member of the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires (CTPCBA) in Argentina. Silvana has served as the chair of the Technical English Department at the Faculties of Agronomy and Food Technology at the Universidad Católica Argentina, as an adjunct professor in the undergraduate Conference Interpreting program at the Universidad del Salvador in Buenos Aires, as a professor in the Master’s in Conference Interpreting program at CLUNY-ISEIT in Madrid, and as a visiting professor at Florida International University (FIU) and at the University of Plattsburg in New York. She has presented at the annual ATA conference and has written several articles published in the association’s magazine, The ATA Chronicle (among others, Remote Simultaneous Interpreting: The Upside and Downside and Remote Simultaneous Interpreting Hubs or Platforms: What’s the Best Option?). Currently, she works as a translator and interpreter in the European market and specializes in the fields of law, finance, auditing and banking.
